Technical At The Rose (Lighting and Sound)

Last Update  03-Jul-2008

Light and sound are controlled from a room at the rear of the main auditorium.  The room is isolated from the theatre by a large window with thick glass.  Two microphones are available in the main house to provide a audio relay of the play.

Lighting

The lighting equipment includes a 60 way Strand GSX computerized desk, a M24 computer board and over 60 individual lanterns.  The dimmer racks are capable of providing 36 x 2kW and 4 x 5kW of fixed power control.  There are also 12 x 2kW of portable power control.  These allow for a great degree of flexibility in lighting design.

There is always a chance to learn as you go by working alongside one of our trained operators or designers.

Sound

The sound system consists of 6 analogue sources, 16 to 8 to 2 channel analogue mixer, and eight channels of amplification.  The sources include 4 and 2 track open reel tape recorders, audio cassette, CD, and minidisk.  These can be routed through the mixer to six amplifiers for the main house and two for the studio.

The requirements for sound vary significantly depending upon the play.  The simplest may use only overture, interval music, plus run in and run out music for each act.  Others like Wind in the Willows will have 50 or more sound cues, ranging from specially written music to complex sequences of cars, a horse, and a car crashing into a pond.  (With these more complex effects some of use our own PCs to modify the basic effects before mixing them down to the final sequence.)
