Season 2010-11
At the committee meeting on the 18th May the season for 2010-11 was agreed. It was decided that rather than wait for an EGM in June that we would announce the season to all members as soon as possible via a newsletter. The following are short descriptions for the plays and include dates and the cast numbers.
Alfie
4th - 9th October 2010 - Main House
Bill Naughton - M9,F9 Samuel French (Some doubling up can be done)
1st rehearsal 9th August.
Our hero Alfie is a cocky Cockney who swaggers and philosophises through the play, making conquest after conquest while communicating his own brand of determined hedonism and rejecting anyone that might touch him too deeply. Charming and touching, this play was an extremely successful film starring Michael Caine as the sublimely amoral Alfie.
The Maintenance Man
1st - 6th November - Main House
Richard Harris - M1,F2 Samuel French
1st rehearsal 6th September
A perceptive and witty look at the collapse of a marriage and the development of an affair. Bob is a do-it-yourself enthusiast with a longing to be needed. Even after his divorce he is constantly visiting his former home, much to the irritation of Diana who doesn't like the competition from his children or his Black and Decker
Danny the Champion of the World
5th - 11th December - Main House
Roald Dahl, adapted for the stage by David Wood Play for children - Full Length Samuel French 7 or 8 actors minimum. Various simple settings.
1st rehearsal 1 1th October
9-year-old Danny lives happily in a gypsy caravan with his devoted father and works in their small village petrol station. When his father fails to return from a poaching expedition on the wealthy estate of nasty, greedy Victor Hazell, Danny fears his father is in grave danger and sets off on a courageous journey, masterminding the most incredible and exciting rescue. Although written for seven actors with doubling, a larger cast is possible and could enhance the "community" feel.

A moving and beautifully observed play consisting of two monologues from a middle-aged brother and sister in a North of England town

HOTEL PARADISO
11th - 16th April - Main House
Georges Feydeau -9 M 8 F Approx
1st Rehearsal -14th February
The central situation is a disreputable Paris hotel where all but one of the first act's characters meet. The down-trodden husband is offering consolation to a dissatisfied wife of his best friend. His friend has been sent by the sanitary authorities to investigate ghostly noises in the haunted room suggestive of a defective water tank. A country innocent, an acquaintance of both families, is trying to find cheap accommodation for a large family of daughters. A studious youth whose subject is Spinoza on Passion, arrives with the parlour maid, who shares his interest in the subject. The number of rooms and doors are barely equal to the strain of the complications that follow

Frank Vickery - M3,F3
1st Rehearsal 14th March
Griff discovers that his son Nigel is not only a drag queen but that he is also gay. Hours later Nigel and his partner are both in hospital seriously injured after a car crash. It is up to Griff's wife Ruby to come to terms with the fears, prejudices and confusion from all parties and to try to keep the peace.
Present Laughter
13th - 18th June - Main House
Noel Coward - M5,F6
1st Rehearsal 18th April
Garry Essendine, a popular and pampered actor, is busily making preparations for an extended tour. His apartment is invaded by Daphne, a beautiful but stage struck youngster
When his wife, his partners and his numerous admirers arrive, Garry is hard pressed to escape an embarrassing and easily misinterpreted situation
With typical Coward repartee and dazzling wit, he sidesteps complications and mounting confusion. Having locked Daphne in a room, he flees his flat with his wife, with whom he has been reunited.

Crew for the new season.
The time is already upon us to start looking for crew to staff the first shows of the new season.
I am organising an informal social night for backstage and technical staff to get together and have a gossip, so that I can start to recruit for the new season. I am especially interested in meeting new technical people who are interested in training to rig and operate lighting and sound equipment. I hope to have trainees learning the ropes alongside experienced technical staff on every show at the start of the new season in order to increase the number of members we have who are able to work technicals on a show. The date is Wednesday 23rd June at 7.30 in the Rose Theatre bar. If you are interested in operating or learning a new skill (including stage management, props, wardrobe) I will be happy to speak to you and put you in touch with the right people. If you are unable to attend the evening, please pass a message to the box office with your details and level of experience and I will hopefully be in touch soon.
Derek Taylor
Stage Director.
Danny Champion of the World
Following the successful play reading for the play Alfie we thought it would be a good idea to “keep the ball rolling” whilst we had the members excited about the new season and put in an extra play reading night to read the above play. This play is packed with lots of interesting character parts and should be a real fun play to be involved with. Come along, the more the merrier.
Should you know anyone interested in joining the Nonentities bring them along too a warm welcome will be assured. OK When?
Tuesday 8th June @ 7:30pm. See you there
