Thoughts from the Directors
As director of Maskerade it is my pleasure to report on what I believe has been a difficult show for all concerned but at the conclusion a highly enjoyable venture for cast, crew and audiences alike.
This was a well attended show (if you remove the Monday & Saturday Matinee performances) turnout was in the region of 88%. For a genre specific show I feel this has been some achievement and that Deb, Brian, Kerena and all concerned in selling & publicising the show should be applauded. Even more so when faced with the lack of response from Mr Pratchett.
Rehearsals were hard work but very rewarding from an artistic point of view with cast members and crew eager to get into the play and open to various techniques and exercises suggested by their director.
We had a lot of new members in the company who had to be brought up to speed very quickly in some of the areas noted above. This they did with considerable fortitude even though some found it hard work at times. We are a company and that is why I felt it was important to try and install an ensemble approach to this production with everyone working for each other. By the middle of the performance week I felt that we had gone some way to achieving this if not completely.
With regard to the technical side of the show I would like to thank Derek and all of his team for the hard work they all put in and which in my opinion was way above and beyond the call of duty.
I would like to mention the beautiful set that Jen designed and was brought to life by the crew. It was exactly as I had envisaged and was a joy to behold. Particular memories are Stef swinging down the rope dressed as the phantom, the scenes set on the balcony & on the roof of the opera house, the mini scene with Vicky and Gyuri on the grand staircase and in particular the fight scene at the end with cast spread around the entire set.
It must also be said that Carole, Lyn and Jayne did an incredible job in making the cast look resplendent in their costumes and with wonderful props too. Everyone looked just as they should have done and it is a testament to our wardrobe department that they can produce such miracles in such a short space of time.
In conclusion I feel that a lot of hard work has been done by all concerned and that we should all be immensely proud of the fantastic show that we produced together.
Many thanks - MCG
The Christmas Entertainment was a great evening filled with song and voice celebrating all that is and was about Christmas. It does seem such a long time ago now (even though it has only been 3 weeks!!) that we all took to the stage.
I know we had a tremendous amount of fun performing it and from the feedback received so far I believe the audience enjoyed it too.
John Slim wrote: The Nonentities make no claim to be a singing group but, collectively and individually, they do make a satisfyingly pleasing noise - directed on this occasion towards such targets as robins, comfort and joy and chestnuts roasting. There is, appropriately, a particularly joyful Gaudete!, whose way has been paved by some stirring dinging and donging, merrily on high… It’s a Charmer!!!!
I would like to thank everyone who helped get the Christmas Entertainment to the stage, in particular Stephen Watkins for his stirring work in getting the choir in to shape once more, Keith, Tony and Derek for their technical support, Debbie and Jen Eglington for the very last minute help producing the programme.
I am already looking forward to this years effort. All those interested please give me a shout nearer the time. Thanks once again for all of your support and comments. RT
The Green Room
(It's not green, but it is a room)
As of 30th Dec 2009 all the furniture in this room has been catalogued. The catalogue has been created for the benefit of all members, to aid with searching for appropriate furniture or other items for use in productions. It will rely on all members ensuring that if anything changes that will affect the catalogue (additions, loans for a show, damage / breakages, removal / disposal) that the stage director is informed so that the catalogue can be updated.
There should be no need to go rummaging through all the stored furniture, just check the catalogue which will be available from the office.
Until any change in plans, furniture currently stored in the green room should be thought of as being kept there when not in use. If you wish to make use of any item in the room, please make a note in the catalogue of who has borrowed it, and when it is likely to be returned into stock.
The catalogue for the green room does not record locations of furniture within the room. This is because the majority items stored there are large, and should be easy to find when being searched for. Also, when an item is in use, there is no requirement to make sure the remaining furniture is back in its correct place.
Please report any breakages / damage - it may need to be amended on the stock sheet as it may affect future use of the item in a production.
PLEASE DO NOT USE THE ROOM AS A DUMPING GROUND.
From time to time additional furniture will be stored in the green room. If there is a 'new' piece of furniture to be stored in the room, please inform the stage director (preferably in advance) so that it can be added to the catalogue, and can be stored in an appropriate location. Derek Taylor
Welcome
I would like you all to extend a very warm welcome to our office staff. Annie has returned from her holiday in Australia and provides a sense of calm as all around her changes. With the new year we have seen the retirement of Brian Potter and the appointment of Debbie Moseley as the Theatre Manager, also we welcome Filomena Griffin as the new receptionist.
I am sure that we all wish Brian well as he leaves our employment although I am sure that he will still be an active member.
Filomena {who wishes to be known as Mena (men+a)} joined the team on the 4th. I am sure that we will make her time with us as enjoyable as possible.
Winter Woes
Monday the 4th January was an "interesting" day. Having started well (at the new start time of 9am) things went well till early afternoon when it appeared that the heavens had opened. A burst pipe in the entrance hall deposited very hot water through the ceiling.
Luckily Les Keith Murray and others with our "in-house" plumber were able to find the problem and take suitable action to make a temporary fix so that the theatre could open for the evening show.
Many thanks to all that were involved.
How You Help Others
The author of the Nonentities’ most recent production “Maskerade” is Terry Pratchett, who was in 2007 diagnosed as having a dementia. In view of this the society agreed that it would be a good opportunity to raise awareness of the support that is available to families who experience dementia through the work of fordementia and the Admiral Nurse service.
There was an information stand in the foyer and collection buckets situated around the building, which offered people the opportunity to make donations made in aid of the charity’s work. In total a collection was made for £517.27.
A special thanks must go to the cast of Maskerade, who decided that instead of buying small mementoes of the performance for the crew, they would donate their entire collection to the charity. This was truly a magnificent gesture and the Nonentities should be proud of all the cast for such generosity. Bob Graham
