74/5

The immortal Charley's Aunt had Pauline Evans as the character with a memorable name, Donna Lucia D'Alvadorez, Stephen Dewsnap as Spettigue and Richard Casewell as the leader of the revels.  The Birthday Party, a dark anecdote left unsolved, was the first of the Pinter productions and The Caucasian Chalk Circle, which crowded the stage and confused the audience, the first Brecht.

A minor thriller, Suddenly at Home, was followed by John Mortimer's autobiographical A Voyage Round My Father - Colin Young as the blind barrister and Alan Green as the son.  Then, to end the season, one of the unqualified successes of the whole 13 years, Vivat! Vivat, Regina! Performances by Doreen Evans and Joy Brockway as the rival queens, Elizabeth I and Mary of Scots, backed by a huge cast (I still remember Michael Hale as John Knox) attracted critical and public acclaim and deserved every handclap of it.
