The Happy Apple, Halfway Up the Tree (a first appearance by Stephen Way) and a grim little Christmas mystery, Who Killed Santa Claus? gave the season a more than usually routine first half.

There was more to enthuse over after Christmas. The touching study of parents caring for a handicapped child, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, was followed by Christopher Fry's early verse drama The Lady's Not For Burning, Hugh Meredith and Di Hackett in the leads, and finally to the 17th century bawdry of Wycherley's The Country Wife.
