A Comedy

Late one June evening, Max Johnson is returning home.  It is a significant day for Max.  It is his birthday and also the day of his early retirement.  Waiting for him at home are his two daughters together with a host of guests all there for a surprise birthday retirement celebration.  All seems to be going well, Max is in the middle of his party piece about the death of Rasputin, when a phone call interrupts proceedings.  On the other end of the telephone is Kate, Max's estranged wife.  Why has she telephoned now and what is the story of how the family fell to pieces?  For Max, an historian, the answers lie in the past and scene by scene, Act 1 takes us back to a fateful night at the end of the previous Christmas when Kate walks out.  Act 2 is Kate's version of events.  Beginning with the same Christmas evening, we are taken forward to the birthday in June and beyond to the conclusion a couple of days later.
