April In Paris
From 1 March 1999
To 6 March 1999
Author - John Godber
April in Paris is very much a play of our time. Al has been made redundant and Bet has a dead-end soul, destroying job.In an effort to escape from their monotonous, boring existence, Al spends all his time in the garden shed, painting pictures which all turn out the same, whilst Bet enters every magazine competition she can find.
We follow their hilarious journey from Yorkshire to Paris and back again. As in all the best comedies, the author has found some pathos, and we, the audience and fellow travellers, are left wondering whether life for Al and Bet will ever be quite the same again.
About the author
Born in 1956, the son of a miner, Godber began writing short stories for Radio Sheffield at the age of sixteen. He trained as a teacher and taught for five years, while doing postgraduate work in drama at the University of Leeds. He is most closely associated with the Hull Truck Theatre Co. of which he has been artistic director since 1984. Most of his plays are social comedies which take place in public arenas and are generally concerned with what Godber has called "working class leisure activities".
