"A Hilarious depiction of the English abroad"

"....there's a visible sense of the melancholy born of stunted expectations and an anger with the country that produced it. Mr. Godber is at his best....."

Director's Note

This warm-hearted comedy from the author of Up ‘n ‘ Under and Teachers was commissioned by the Hull 1992 Festival for the Hull Truck Theatre Company, during the last major recession. When our current season was chosen way back last June, there was little mention in the media of ‘credit crunch’ or ‘banking crisis’. The choice now seems very appropriate, one wonders if our artistic director had been reading the tea leaves!

Bet and Al lead a quiet, hum-drum life in their small Yorkshire home until Bet wins a ‘Romantic Breaks’ competition in a magazine. The prize, a holiday for two in Paris, represents their first experience abroad and has profound effects on the way they look at the world around them once they return home.

The challenge in presenting April in Paris has been to make a play, which essentially was devised for studio and small-scale productions, work in the main house. The solution we adopted was to include a lot more sound effects and also to use projections to conjure up the sights and sounds of the vibrant city, which is Paris.

We hope that you will enjoy our efforts.
