In its 300 year history, Royal Ascot has always been held at its Berkshire home but improvements to the racecourse in 2005 necessitated a move north to York. Pearl, Jan, Shelley and Linda are the fish-filleting foursome for whom work, love amd life is just one long hard slog. Their fortunes improve when Linda finds tickets to Ladies Day at Royal Ascot in York. Out go the hairnets, the wellies and the overalls as the girls do themselves up and head for the races. As the day unfolds, the champagne flows, secrets spill out and their horses keep winning. |
With its Yorkshire heart and soul, Ladies Day has all the warmth of Calendar Girls and The Full Monty. |
Director's NoteI have been a member of the Rose Theatre for over 17 years, and have been involved with dozens of productions either on or backstage. I am honoured to make my directorial debut with “Ladies’ Day” As an actor, I always envied a Director for not having to learn lines and cope with chronic nerves before each show; it seems a far simpler life moving around the auditorium, drinking coffee and holding a clipboard….I have even been tempted to wear a beret at times, and with cigarette holder in hand, shout instructions to people before collapsing with exhaustion into my Directors chair! I could not have been more wrong! Trying to have a “vision” of the entire show, in terms of lighting, setting, music, pace and above all else, characterisation, has been far harder than I could have imagined. The cast have done me proud and responded warmly to my ideas. Ironically, my first outing as a Director, comes at a time when I have decided to “hang up my tights”. So, even though I have had the finish line in my sights (pardon the pun), it is with a big tear in my eye that I am moving to pastures new! Enjoy the show!
