For Annabel and her sister, Miriam, their sunlit garden is filled with deeply buried childhood memories. But when night begins to fall, is it only the past which comes back to haunt them? Or something infinitely more terrifying.

First performed in 2002, Ayckbourne’s suspense drama about murder and blackmail sees this prolific and much loved writer at his very best.

Expect the Unexpected from this Ayckbourne Play

Following the death of her father and an absence of almost thirty years, Annabel Chester returns to her family home. On her arrival the prodigal daughter is overwhelmed by the ghosts of her past and tortured childhood. Unexpectedly she is greeted by former nurse, Alice Moody, who informs Annabel that her father’s death was far from a natural one; and that her younger sister Miriam is no longer the sweet and innocent child Annabel left behind all those years before. Could there possibly be any truth in these “stories”? Could Miriam really have changed so much?.. and how can she possibly find the money to ensure Alice’s silence.

Scatty Miriam and tough Annabel join forces against Alice, sending them spiralling into a bizarre and fateful chain of events; uncovering a whole Pandora's Box along the way. But who is hiding amongst the overgrowth of the ancient tennis courts? What forgotten secret lurks beneath the timeworn summerhouse? ... And who is the true “Snake in the Grass”?

Alan Ayckbourn, in his usual inimitable style takes us on a suspenseful journey about murder, blackmail and childhood lost. Combining humour, taut drama and more than a few stings in the tale along the way. He presents us with a brilliant, eerie and immensely enjoyable piece of theatre.... Expect the unexpected!
