Alan Ayckbourn

Description

The Boy Who Fell Into A Book by Alan Ayckbourn is a play for children and for fun-loving adults about characters who overlap into each other’s worlds. A wonderful, fast-paced fantasy adventure, served up with typical Alan Ayckbourn magic and lashings of imagination, The Boy Who Fell Into a Book, like Alice in Wonderland before it, is an exciting journey into the unknown.

Kevin is into his favourite book in a BIG way! But it's time for bed, and Dad won't stop nagging him to turn out the light. Suddenly, Kevin's in the thick of the action alongside his hero, the streetwise investigator Rockfist Slim.

Somehow they must travel through all the books on Kevin's bookshelf to find a way home and escape the clutches of the mysterious underworld baddie known only as The Green Shark. Their headlong dash takes them through Grimm's Fairy Tales, Kidnapped, a book of Ghost Stories and even Chess For Beginners... only just avoiding a family of jelly-throwing Wooblies along the way!

A wonderfully inventive play by Britain’s most popular and most frequently performed dramatist.

Directors Notes

A play for children and adults, Alan Ayckbourn’s “The Boy Who Fell into a Book” takes a young inquisitive boy and a streetwise investigator into a world of magic and adventure. Together they stumble through favourite fairy tales and children’s books trying to discover the identity of “The Green Shark” in order to solve Rockfist’s case and enable Kevin to return home. Facing old enemies, unfamiliar territory and even “Wooblies”, Ayckbourn uses Kevin and Rockfist to explore the funny and often charming relationship that develops between a boy and his hero.

Whilst it is not so widely known that Ayckbourn wrote plays for children, we hope you will find the subject material and the witty dialogue entertaining for young and old alike.

We are delighted that this play gives us the opportunity for the first time to offer a leading role to one of the most experienced members of the Nonentites Youth Theatre. Our Youth Theatre provides training in drama and theatre for young people aged 12 to 16 years. They meet each Saturday morning at the Rose Theatre and would welcome new members. If you know anyone who may be interested, please ask them to come along.

This production has provided our technical team with new challenges and we are particularly pleased to welcome “guest appearances” to our Stage Management team from members of Theatre Once Removed, who have brought their own productions to The Rose Theatre for several years. We are grateful for their support and hope that for even greater co-operation between local amateur theatre societies. Careers, interests and hobbies make great demands on all our lives and it is difficult to find sufficient people for all of the posts in a busy theatre. If you, or any of your friends, are interested in helping keep theatre alive, please ask at the Box Office and we will be delighted to send you a Membership application form.

Meanwhile, please relax and watch the show – we hope you find it as enjoyable as we have; and of course from all the members of the Nonentities we wish you a Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. If you haven’t booked for our Christmas Entertainment yet, please visit the Box Office tonight – you may not get another chance!
